An exploration of traditional building materials
led to the design of the Courtyard House as an introversion
and detachment from the outside world. Nevertheless
the design is rooted in its site, a series of terraced
slopes rising towards a hill which conceals a rocky
outcrop. As one moves thru the house, a series of
courtyards serve to contain outdoor space and create
interlinked areas. The enclosed spaces of the house
are shaded and spacious, defined by brick vaults
which give a sense of shelter, contrasting with
the open courtyards.
